This 10,575 SF sustainable facility provides expanded space for Clemson University’s facilities within Hobcaw Barony, a privately owned research reserve. The building houses office space for researchers, a smart classroom, conference facilities, a small assembly space, and outdoor classroom pavilion.

Large roof overhangs, porches, and a materials palette of clapboard siding, metal roofing, and tabby paving all reference an original building on the site. Three brick planes at the building entrance and radius walk are built with salvaged brick from the Baruch family residence.

Sustainable design strategies include products with high-recycled content, low VOC adhesives and paints, and rapidly renewable materials such as agrifibers and soy-based products. The site selection and construction process accommodated the nesting season of the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species native to the site.
