This 80-student school designed for children with disabilities provides traditional classrooms, self-contained and low-stimulation teaching rooms, a physical therapy suite, an independent living suite, and an occupational placement suite.

Sustainability strategies for this LEED® certified school include a highly reflective roof to minimize cooling loads, a ground-source heat pump system, and low-flow fixtures. Materials were selected for efficiency, local sourcing, and recycled/rapidly renewable content. Special attention was given to the reduction of indoor air contaminants by use of low-VOC adhesives, sealants, paints and carpeting. Designers minimized the building’s footprint by reducing paved areas, maintaining more than 75% of the site as vegetated open space. The transportation plan provides bike racks, showers, and parking for low-emitting/fuel-efficient vehicles.
