Sustainable Model Houses at Porter Gaud
Charleston’s Nikos Katsibas recently served on a panel of judges for Porter Gaud’s Sustainable Model Houses. Constructed by teams of middle school students, each group adapted their house to a specific climate zone and locale of their choice.
Judges scored the models based on the following:
- How does the home take advantage of natural light?
- Considering your climate are you concerned about how that could affect the comfort level and temperature inside your home?
- Do you have design features to maximize or minimize heat transfer?
- How do your design features maximize and improve the energy efficiency of your home and decrease the need to use HVAC?
- What renewable energy source did you choose and why?
- Why is it important to improve energy efficiency of homes?
