This partial library renovation converted stacks and reading rooms into 32,000 SF of new space for Bob Jones University’s growing allied health and nursing skills program. The program includes a 14-bed nursing skills lab with high-fidelity patient simulators and headwalls; a simulation lab with four high-fidelity patient simulation rooms for trauma/ICU, mother/baby, pediatric, and adult patients; three classrooms; labs for human performance and fitness/wellness; and suites for the Community Disorders program and faculty offices. The design creates wide corridors that allow for informal social interactions and opportunities for serendipitous creative collisions. The layout prioritizes natural light with active corridors on the perimeter and transparent classroom and lab entries, and the facility required additional storage for programming, maintenance, and storage of the specialized equipment used for coursework. The design of these lofts draws inspiration from the wooden materials palette, with exposed timber, post-tensioned concrete, and utilities on display throughout the property’s interior.
