Brookhaven Innovation AcademyChamblee, GA Brookhaven Innovation Academy employs an innovative project-based curriculum with a focus on technology and coding to prepare students in grades K-8 for success. Having reached capacity at its original location, the charter school will move into its new home in the fall of 2019. The new facility will accommodate 580 students with an option to expand to 720 students. The new building design carefully integrates the 30 foot change in grade, blends into the surrounding residential neighborhood, and creates integrated plazas for recess and outdoor learning. Maker spaces and pull out spaces turn the corridors into classrooms. Other design highlights include thoughtfully composed coding rooms and interior ramps that create a natural path of circulation throughout the building. The two-story building features two classroom wings and a multipurpose/dining wing connected by an active circulation spine. The exterior materials palette makes extensive use of contemporary human-scale aluminum planks with a wood finish, which capture the warm look of wood while minimizing long-term maintenance. A long, low breezeway framed by the horizontal planks offers shelter while filtering light over the gently sloped sidewalks. Behind the breezeway, generous rhythmic windows fill the interior with light. A double-height canopy clearly defines a welcoming entry. SF: 48,700
