This new private student housing building in the historic center of downtown Charleston accommodates over 400 students in 2, 3, and 4 bedroom apartment-style suites.

The College of Charleston needed a housing project within walking distance of campus which was sensitive to neighbors, transitioned gracefully between historic architecture and the modern aesthetic required for student life, and lent itself to a fast-paced construction schedule. Fully-furnished private rooms with full-sized beds open into shared living and full kitchen areas with washers and dryers, flat-screen televisions, and high-speed internet access, with a college-operated ground-floor fitness center close by.

The final scheme arranged suites of apartments around a light-filled courtyard. The 8-story design is human-scaled, with a subtle color palette taking its cues from historic campus details. The mass of the building is divided into residential-sized segments with varying heights, planes, and materials for visual interest. The project is located on existing pedestrian paths connecting the College of Charleston to the center of the city, and incorporates a pedestrian passage through the building. Extensive landscaping links the surrounding site to both King Street and the College of Charleston campus.
