Located on a site which has served as a schoolyard since the 1800’s, this downtown school for Charleston County replaces an outdated 1950’s era facility which was largely hidden behind an imposing wall. The new design erodes significant portions of this wall, bringing play areas forward to enliven the streetscape while preserving much of the character of the historic urban site. The new design encourages connections with the community and celebrates the historic schoolyard garden and its curving white wall.
The layout creates separate zones for quiet academic functions and energetic common spaces. The classroom wing is tucked away at the back of the site, utilizing large exterior windows to provide abundant natural light in the learning spaces. The bustling activities wing is aligned with the street and houses the administration area, art room with exterior patio, and cafeteria on the first floor.
A new, prominent entry serves as the public face of the school, interfacing with the street and offering shelter underneath a large covered porch. The school’s orientation, massing, and exterior materials all respect the neighborhood context, with details echoing those of the adjacent civic auditorium which serves as a community landmark.
In addition to being more visible, more durable, more accessible, and more efficient than its predecessor, the new school is also designed for sustainability. High-performance mechanical systems, orientation for daylighting and passive solar strategies, low-emitting materials, and enhanced acoustics make the school a greener, brighter, more cost-effective, and more enjoyable place in which to learn.
