The Public Kitchen & Bar

The Public was conceived as a casual modern dining experience where patrons could gather and enjoy the laid back urban environment of Savannah. The project took an underutilized retail space and created a distinct restaurant and bar with a rooftop dining area. The project was honored with a Preservation Award from the Historic Savannah Foundation.

The building was originally constructed circa 1888 as a walled garden belonging to the adjacent historic residence at 3 West Liberty, designed by John Norris. During the early 20th century, the garden was enclosed and a rooftop terrace was added above it. As part of the renovation, the unseemly storefront was removed and the rhythm of the original doors and awnings was restored. The transoms were also redeveloped to allow more natural light into the space. The steel columns were reinterpreted with a sturdy granite base and warm mahogany trim along with complementary mahogany entrance doors. The Public is a beloved local restaurant where the interior and exterior spaces flow together to create a variety of intimate experiences, including the restored rooftop terrace.
