University of North Carolina Charlotte Laurel Hall

Charlotte, NC

LS3P and Ayers Saint Gross collaborated on the advance planning and design of this new residence hall for the South Village sector of the campus. This area is undergoing redevelopment to establish a vibrant student community centered around a new student commons area and signature campus quadrangles. This new 6-level freshmen dormitory provides the university with 408 beds in suites ranging from 2 to 5 beds. Fully accessible units with roll-in showers are included on each level. The building also features common areas, a flexible classroom, a staff apartment, and residence hall staff areas.

The design addresses the steep topography of the site with 3 public entrances to accommodate grade variations and accessibility requirements. A signature glass tower houses a double-height entry lounge and serves as an entry landmark. Design elements are consistent with the university’s architectural guidelines regarding signature brick, architectural precast concrete accents, and pitched roofs.
